Area 1 Advisors,

The following information is from Mr. Chris Bennett and Mr. Heath Lucas, coordinators of the 2025 Area I Small Engines CDE. If you have a team that may qualify for the Area 1 CDE, please read this email thoroughly.

The 2025 Area 1 Small Engines CDE will take place Friday, March 14th at the Farm Shop on the LA Tech South Campus. Team check-in will start at 8:00 am and the CDE will begin at 9:00 am. Team contestants will be designated as A and B at check-in. Student assignment for troubleshooting and engine assembly will be determined by drawing.

There will be a 50-question multiple choice exam from the Small Engines CDE test bank as well as 10 samples for the parts identification practicum. We will use parts from the 900 series engine for this practicum and every student must provide their own manual for this engine. In addition, students will use the parts manual for their engine model (900, 950, or 1150) in the troubleshooting practicum if a parts request is necessary. The parts manuals and CDE rules can be found on the Louisiana FFA website under the small engines section of the CDE/LDE portion of the website.

As a reminder, teams should bring pencils and clipboards for the exam and parts identification. Each team must provide their own stopwatches, representative to keep time, and fuel/oil to crank engines and students must wear safety glasses during the engine practicums.

Troubleshooting engines must be received no later than Friday, March 7, 2025 in order to have sufficient time to set bugs. Engines should be free of all oil and fuel and have the school name and team name on the box as well as on the engine itself (ex: LA Tech FFA - Blue Team). Demerits will be assessed and added during bugging. Engines can be shipped or dropped off at:
